Starting your own business is never easy – but when it comes from the heart, it becomes something truly special. Chelsea Sallese’s journey to opening Sallese & Co. is one of passion, perseverance, and purpose.

Inspired by her daughter's battle with leukemia, Chelsea set out to create a salon and boutique that prioritizes health, sustainability, and community.

Her vision goes beyond just hair and beauty – she’s building a space where people feel like family, where local artists and businesses are celebrated, and where every product and service reflects her dedication to wellness and ethical beauty. Located in the heart of Downtown Kenosha, Sallese & Co. is not just a dream realized – it’s a gift to the community.

In this interview, we dive into Chelsea’s inspiring journey, her commitment to clean beauty, and the exciting plans she has in store.

Visit Kenosha: What inspired you to start Sallese & Co., and how did the idea come to life?

Chelsea Sallese: My daughter’s battle with leukemia made me passionate about reducing toxic exposure in my industry. I began researching products and realized how many beauty and wellness items are filled with carcinogens. That inspired me to create an eco-friendly, chemical-free space where I could not only offer services as a stylist but also provide healthier alternatives for beauty and wellness.

Visit Kenosha: Can you share more about the vision behind Sallese & Co. and what you hope it will bring to Kenosha?

Chelsea Sallese: I want to create a warm, inclusive space where people feel like family – no more sterile salon environments. I want everyone who walks through my doors to feel at home. And if I can convince just one person to swap out a product in their cabinet for a healthier option, I’ll feel like I’ve made a difference.

Visit Kenosha: What services does your salon offer, and how do they differ from other salons in the area?

Chelsea Sallese: Right now, we offer hair, bridal, and lash services, as well as facial waxing. We plan to expand into nails and facials soon. What sets us apart is the variety of fun “pop-up” events we host – things like book club meetings, permanent jewelry and tattoo parties, and even birthday parties for kids.

Visit Kenosha: How has your background and experience influenced the concept and design of Sallese & Co.?

Chelsea Sallese: I feel like my whole life has led me to this point. I’ve trained with some of the best in the industry, and my love for Downtown Kenosha, giving back to the community, and prioritizing health and wellness have all shaped Sallese & Co. It’s a perfect fusion of my passions.

Visit Kenosha: What has been the most exciting or challenging part of launching your own business?

Chelsea Sallese: The financial strain, hands down. My husband and I were committed to starting this business without taking on a ton of debt. We agreed that if we couldn’t do it with what we had saved, we wouldn’t do it at all. That made things tough, but it also ensured we built something sustainable from the start.

Visit Kenosha: What can customers expect when they walk into Sallese & Co.? Can you describe the overall vibe and aesthetic?

Chelsea Sallese: Warm, relaxing, and like you’re part of the family.

Visit Kenosha: What are some of your personal favorite products or services that are featured at Sallese & Co.?

Chelsea Sallese: I love any deep conditioning treatment paired with a scalp massage and a blowout. I also give a killer men’s cut and beard trim. As more stylists join the team, I’m excited to share their favorite services too – stay tuned!

Visit Kenosha: Are there any unique promotions or events planned for the grand opening?

Chelsea Sallese: Yes! We will be hosting a "Women in Business" makeover and headshot photoshoot in March. The photoshoot will be donation-based, with all proceeds going to a local foundation that supports the community. Our grand opening event is planned for the spring!

Visit Kenosha: How has your husband, Anthony, been involved in this venture, and how do you support each other’s professional goals?

Chelsea Sallese: Anthony has been the backbone of this entire operation. I come up with these wild ideas, and instead of shutting them down, he jumps right in and tells me to go for it. He handled the heavy lifting and construction at the salon, but his real expertise is marketing – he owns his own company in that field. He’ll be managing our website and inventory systems as well. Truly a family-run business, and I’m beyond grateful for his support.

Visit Kenosha: How do you choose the products and brands featured in your boutique?

Chelsea Sallese: Honestly, I go by energy. If a brand or product aligns with our values and feels like a good fit for our space, I’m all in.

"We focus on local, fair trade, sustainable, eco-friendly, and unique products. Supporting local artists is a priority."

Visit Kenosha: Will Sallese & Co. carry exclusive or custom-made items?

Chelsea Sallese: Yes! We have some exciting exclusive items coming soon, including custom-made products by yours truly. Stay tuned for announcements!

Visit Kenosha: Are there plans to expand your product range or collaborate with other businesses?

Chelsea Sallese: Not just in the future – right now! Collaborating with other businesses is one of my favorite things. I believe there’s room for all of us, and by working together, we can create something truly special for the community.

Visit Kenosha: How will Sallese & Co. showcase local artists?

Chelsea Sallese: We already have two gallery artists displaying their work in our space, and we’re always looking for more. If you’re a local artist, come see if we’d be a good fit to showcase your work! I’d love to host gallery nights featuring local musicians and catering spreads from some of our favorite businesses – maybe even our neighbors at C&M next door.

Visit Kenosha: How does your artistic background influence the boutique’s design and vision?

Chelsea Sallese: I’m the first “artist” in my family, which is full of hardworking, blue-collar folks. When I said I wanted to go to beauty school, people thought I was crazy. But as I grew in my craft and connected with other artists in the community, I realized I wanted Sallese & Co. to be more than just a salon – I wanted it to be a creative hub.

Visit Kenosha: Can customers expect partnerships with other local businesses?

Chelsea Sallese: 1000% yes! Community involvement is a huge part of our mission. Stay connected on our socials to see what’s coming up.

Visit Kenosha: Will you host community events to support the local economy?

Chelsea Sallese: Yes! Our goal is to host at least one in-house event per month while also participating in other community events.

Visit Kenosha: How does sustainability factor into your business?

"Sustainability is one of my biggest soapboxes. Reducing our carbon footprint and ensuring our products are ethically sourced is a top priority."

Visit Kenosha: How do you hope Sallese & Co. reflects and celebrates Kenosha’s unique character?

Chelsea Sallese: Downtown Kenosha is my favorite place in the world. I’m so grateful to raise my family here and now own a business here. My goal is for Sallese & Co. to become an integral part of the community and to give back as much as the community has given to us.

Visit Kenosha: As a member of the Downtown Kenosha Outreach and Retention Committee, how does that align with your vision for Sallese & Co.?

Chelsea Sallese: Being part of the committee helps me stay engaged with new businesses, volunteer opportunities, and community events. It keeps my business aligned with my personal values.

Visit Kenosha: You juggle many roles—how do you balance them all?

Chelsea Sallese: Organized chaos. Being a mom and wife comes first, but I’m incredibly lucky to have a strong support system. I couldn’t do it without them.

Visit Kenosha: How does your work as a stylist tie into your vision for Sallese & Co.?

"For me, it’s always been about connection. Whether you’re coming in for a workshop, a product, or a haircut, I want you to leave feeling seen, valued, and loved."

Visit Kenosha: How has your personal journey, including your family’s experience, influenced your business?

Chelsea Sallese: I never thought I’d be thanking cancer, but it changed my life. When our daughter was sick, I learned so many lessons. The community showed up for us in ways I’ll never forget. That experience led me to prioritize family, wellness, and giving back. Sallese & Co. is a reflection of those values.
