Francesca & Co. Salon is more than a place for great hair—it’s a slice of home. Founded by first-generation Italian American and Kenosha native Francesca Kolens, the salon is built on family values, a strong work ethic, and the kind of hospitality that makes you feel like you're part of the famiglia the moment you walk in.

In this warm and inspiring interview, we sit down with Francesca to hear how her roots, her passion for beauty, and her deep love for the Kenosha community have helped shape a Salon that’s just as heartfelt as it is stylish.

Francesca & Co. Salon

Visit Kenosha: What strategies have been most effective in attracting and retaining clients at your salon?

Francesca: Word of mouth has truly been our biggest asset. Our clients have always been our greatest supporters—they’re loyal, enthusiastic, and genuinely excited when we grow. Whether we’re adding a new service or completing a new certification, they’re the first to cheer us on, book appointments, and spread the word to friends and family. That kind of support has helped us thrive and stay deeply connected to our community.

Visit Kenosha: What do you love most about being a business owner in Downtown Kenosha?

Francesca: The community vibe is everything. We’re surrounded by incredible local businesses, and there’s this amazing sense of connection and support. I love seeing my clients out and about—even when they don’t have an appointment, they’ll wave through our big front windows or pop in to say hello. Thanks to the foot traffic from nearby shops and restaurants, we often meet new people who stop in to check out the salon or grab products. It’s a beautiful cycle of support that keeps downtown vibrant and welcoming. Plus, being part of the events and activities here adds so much fun and meaning to what we do.

Visit Kenosha: How do events like “Sip & Stroll” contribute to community engagement and business growth?

Francesca: Events like Sip & Stroll are a game-changer. They bring in a wonderful mix of familiar faces and newcomers—people who may have never walked into our salon before. It’s a great way to introduce Francesca & Co. to potential clients and to showcase what we’re all about. These events create energy and excitement, and they help build lasting connections between businesses and the community.

Visit Kenosha: What advice would you give someone thinking of starting a business in Downtown Kenosha?

Francesca: I’d say—go for it! Come downtown, walk around, explore the different areas, and talk to other business owners. There’s so much happening here, and it’s a great place to grow something meaningful. Getting involved with local committees is also a great way to stay in the loop and build relationships. And hey, I’m down here too—so that’s a bonus! [laughs]

Visit Kenosha: What’s something people might not realize about owning and running a salon?

Francesca: People always say, “Fran, your job seems like so much fun!”—and it really is. I love what I do. But behind the scenes, it’s a lot of work. After 12-hour days behind the chair, I’m still managing operations, doing paperwork, planning for the future, and researching the latest in the industry. It’s long hours and a lot of hats to wear. But if my clients see joy and passion when they’re in my chair, that means I’m doing something right.

Visit Kenosha: Are you originally from Kenosha? If not, what brought you here?

Francesca: I am! I’m first-generation—my parents are from Italy, and I was born and raised right here in Kenosha. This city is home, and I’m so proud to be part of its growth and community.

Visit Kenosha: What inspired you to pursue a career in beauty?

Francesca: My parents always encouraged me to go to college, but I knew deep down that traditional classrooms weren’t the right fit for me. When I discovered cosmetology, it felt like everything I was looking for—creativity, hands-on learning, and endless opportunities to grow. What surprised me was how much depth there is in the curriculum—there’s real science and anatomy involved, and it challenged me in all the right ways. It turned out to be one of the best decisions of my life.

Visit Kenosha: When you're not working or involved with downtown projects, how do you unwind?

Francesca: I love spending time with my husband and kids—trying new places, playing games, and making memories. I’m also incredibly close to my family—my sisters Annalisa and Rita, my sister-in-law Amy, and my cousins. We’re always together, laughing and having fun. That time fills my heart and keeps me grounded.

Visit Kenosha: If you could style any celebrity’s hair, who would it be—and why?

Francesca: Honestly, my clients are my celebrities. I want every person in my chair to feel like the most important person in the room—and I think they’d tell you that’s how they feel! But if I had to pick, I’d love to style someone for a red-carpet event. Seeing my work on that kind of stage would be such a “pinch me” moment.

Visit Kenosha: What’s a dream vacation or travel destination on your list?

Francesca: I’d love to take my kids to visit my parents’ hometown in Italy. It would be such a meaningful trip—to show them where they come from, experience the culture, and create lasting memories together.

Visit Kenosha: Who has inspired you most in life or in business?

Francesca: My biggest inspiration is my mom. She was one of the hardest-working women I’ve ever known. At one point, she was running three restaurants, including our family’s original business—Special Pizza. It’s still in the family today, now owned by my cousins. My mom was the heart of that place. She led by example—working alongside her staff, taking care of everyone, and making customers feel like family. I learned so much from her, especially about leading with heart and taking pride in what you do.
On a personal note, I’ll never forget my teacher at Somers Elementary, Mrs. Sally Gross. I struggled with learning, and she once told me, “It might take you a little longer, but you’ll get there.” Those words stuck with me. Everything I’ve achieved may have taken time, but I got there—and her belief in me made a lasting impact.

Visit Kenosha: Do you have a personal mantra or philosophy you live by?

Francesca: Absolutely—enjoy each day you’re here. Love deeply, laugh often, and stay positive, even when things get hard. I remind myself and my kids that life moves fast—we’re all just passing through, so make every day count. Let go of the little things, find joy in the moment, and always live with heart.

Visit Kenosha: What are you most proud of—both professionally and personally?

Francesca: Professionally, I’m proud of building a salon that feels like home to so many people. Personally, I’m proud of the balance I’ve created—running a business while being present for my kids. It’s not always easy, but it’s important to me that they feel supported and loved. They’ve been my biggest cheerleaders, and that means everything.

Visit Kenosha: Where do you hope to see yourself—and your salon—five years from now?

Francesca: This past year has been incredible—we purchased our building and started remodeling, which was a big milestone. In five years, I hope to keep growing the business, especially by launching Francesca & Co. education and certification programs. I want to help others in the industry grow their careers. Personally, I hope to take a few more family trips and continue building a life that’s balanced and fulfilling.

Visit Kenosha: What inspired you to open your own salon? What’s the story behind Francesca & Co.?

Francesca: Francesca & Co. was born out of my upbringing and my passion for the beauty industry. Watching my parents build their business taught me the value of dedication and independence. I’ve always loved making people feel confident and cared for, and I wanted to create a space where that could happen every day. Francesca & Co. is more than just a salon—it’s a welcoming environment where people can laugh, relax, and leave feeling their absolute best.

Visit Kenosha: What sets Francesca & Co. apart from other salons in the area?

Francesca: I have so much respect for the talent in our community—every salon offers something special. What sets Francesca & Co. apart is our unique setup. We operate with a team of independent contractors, but we’ve created a true sense of family and support. Each stylist runs their own business, but we work together in a collaborative, uplifting environment. Clients can feel that energy when they walk through the door.

Definitely, shout out to the incredible team we have at Francesca & Co. Every single person brings something unique and valuable to the table, and I’m so grateful for the passion and talent they bring every day.

While they all have their own specialties, what really stands out is how versatile and passionate they are across the board. I’m genuinely proud of the work we do together and the energy we’ve created at Francesca & Co.
