Wilmot Raceway has been a beloved fixture in Western Kenosha County for an impressive 75 years. 2026 marks Season 76. Located at the Kenosha County Fairgrounds (30820 111th Street in Wilmot, Wisconsin), this 3/8-mile clay oval dirt track offers thrilling races every year from May through September. It’s a place where motorsport enthusiasts, families, and visitors gather, creating lasting memories amid the roar of engines and the excitement of dirt track racing.

The track’s rich history runs deep. As Jenny Hesse shares, “Growing up, I rarely missed a Saturday night race. It was a family tradition, and now I’m proud to continue that with my own family.” Growing up, Chris Klemko attended the races with his dad; they very rarely missed a race.

Over the decades, Wilmot Raceway has remained a cornerstone of local culture, adapting to modern times with improvements such as electronic scoring systems and LED lighting while keeping its traditional racing divisions intact. Races have expanded from just Saturday nights to other nights as well.

What truly sets Wilmot apart is the unique challenge presented by its dirt surface. Unlike asphalt tracks, the clay oval changes dramatically throughout each race night. Jenny explains, “The track starts out tacky and heavy, but by feature time it becomes slicker and more difficult to navigate. Drivers must watch closely and adjust their car setups as the surface evolves lap after lap.”

Preparing such a track is a careful balance. Chris, who helps prep the track, describes the process: “We start days ahead, grading and watering the surface. On hot, dry weeks, we can put down up to 100,000 gallons of water to keep the track moist and safe.”

Race days at Wilmot Raceway begin long before the first car speeds onto the track. Preparation depends heavily on the weather, humidity, wind, and sunlight – which all influence how early and how much work goes into readying the surface. On race nights, a dedicated crew of 35 to 50 people handle everything from track safety and race officiating to concessions and facility upkeep. “We have a fast-response safety team on ATVs and UTVs, a staffed fire truck, and ambulance on every race night,” Jenny says. “Safety is our top priority for racers, spectators, and staff alike.” Spectators are protected by a 19' catch fence and concrete wall on the grandstand side and a concrete wall and catch fence on the pit side.

While racing is the heartbeat of Wilmot Raceway, it is also a vibrant venue hosting a variety of events throughout the year. Beyond regular races, the fairgrounds see truck and tractor pulls, combine demolition derbies, the popular Monster Truck Throwdown, PROST! Das Fest Wisconsin, a weekly seasonal flea market, and rodeos. And, of course, the Kenosha County Fair in August.

The International Demolition Derby held during the Kenosha County Fair is a highlight, featuring around 100 cars in multiple heats, including divisions for kids - thrilling fans of all ages. “The demo derby is one of the best in southeastern Wisconsin,” Jenny says. “It’s a crowd favorite every year.”

Visitors to Wilmot Raceway enjoy more than just the races. The facility offers great food options, with concession stand favorites like loaded fries earning rave reviews. The grounds are clean and accessible, with comfortable bleacher seating and camping available for those wanting to extend their race weekend experience.

One of the most memorable aspects for families is the opportunity to get close to the action. With a pit pass, spectators can visit the pits before, during, or after the races. The drivers often invite kids and adults alike to sit in the cars to get a true feel for racing. Jenny adds, “It’s a real thrill and makes the experience even more special.” Birthday guests can even experience the thrill of riding in the pace truck during a race lap – a special treat that many never forget.

Wilmot Raceway is also an important economic partner in the community. Local hotels, restaurants, and gas stations benefit from race weekend visitors, with hotels offering bulk room specials and eateries seeing increased patronage. The raceway and the Kenosha County community actively support one another, helping to promote growth and tourism. “We try to support each other as much as possible,” Jenny notes, “and it’s rewarding to see how the raceway contributes to the local economy.”

If you haven’t yet experienced the thrill of a night at Wilmot Raceway, now is the perfect time to dive in. With decades of history, passionate staff, welcoming drivers, and events that bring the community together, this dirt track remains a vibrant and exciting part of Kenosha County’s heritage.

So, mark your calendar, bring your family and friends, and get ready to witness the roar of engines and the spirit of racing at Wilmot Raceway, where tradition and adrenaline meet under the lights.
