There’s something special about the holiday season in Kenosha — the lights glow a little brighter, the lakefront feels a little cozier, and our small businesses shine in a way only locals understand. From festive storefronts and family traditions to community events that bring everyone together, the people behind our shops, cafés, studios, and boutiques play a huge part in what makes this time of year feel magical.

In this series of holiday interviews, we sat down with a handful of Kenosha’s small business owners to hear how they celebrate the season — from their favorite local traditions to the ways they spread joy through their work. Their stories show exactly why supporting local isn’t just a purchase… it’s being part of something bigger.

Let’s spread some holiday cheer and get to know Laurel Paschke, the owner of In the Garden of Eden!

This Downtown Kenosha shop offers lingerie, bridal, adult novelty items, and a knowledgeable sales team dedicated to assisting you.

What are your favorite local holiday traditions or events in Kenosha?

I love Lightin’ Up!  Especially all of the businesses decorated in fun different ways and the amazing lights on 6th Avenue.

Do you have any special holiday traditions or themes for your business this year?
Are there any new holiday specials or events you’re hosting for the Kenosha community?

Our Christmas theme this year is Nightmare Before Christmas.  Jack and Sally are a classic couple who are "Simply Meant To Be."

What role does your business play in making Kenosha a festive destination?

We love to call our store "The Fun Store", if you know you know lol.

What do you love most about interacting with the community during the Holidays?

Everyone is always in a good mood and looking for fun gift ideas.

What do your customers seem to love most about your business during the Holidays?

Our assortment of unique gifts.  We like to say we have the perfect gift for your fun friend!

How do you thank your customers for their support during the holiday season?

We have a free gift with purchase every day.

Is there a holiday tradition from your childhood you still celebrate today?
What’s your favorite holiday treat or dessert?

We always order Chinese food on Christmas Eve and open all our presents together. Except what Santa brings, of course.

What’s your favorite holiday movie or TV special?

Hands down, Elf.  I can watch it every day at Christmas time and still laugh at my favorite parts.

Real tree or artificial tree — which do you prefer and why?

Real tree, always. They are another great way to Support Local!

Ugly sweater fan or avoid them at all costs?

No to ugly sweaters.  I owned too many of them in the 80s lol.

Eggnog, yes or no and why?

I can't do eggnog.

Naughty or nice?

Well both of course. Who wants to only be one?
