There’s something special about the holiday season in Kenosha — the lights glow a little brighter, the lakefront feels a little cozier, and our small businesses shine in a way only locals understand. From festive storefronts and family traditions to community events that bring everyone together, the people behind our shops, cafés, studios, and boutiques play a huge part in what makes this time of year feel magical.
In this series of holiday interviews, we sat down with a handful of Kenosha’s small business owners to hear how they celebrate the season — from their favorite local traditions to the ways they spread joy through their work. Their stories show exactly why supporting local isn’t just a purchase… it’s being part of something bigger.
Let’s spread some holiday cheer and get to know Katie Raines, the owner of To & From Gift Shop in Downtown Kenosha!

What are your favorite local holiday traditions or events in Kenosha?
I love the tree lighting and the ice sculptures (Snow Daze Festival in January)!
Do you have any special holiday traditions or themes for your business this year in addition to your Black Friday deals?
We will have deals running every weekend through Christmas!
How does your business collaborate with other Kenosha businesses during the holidays?
To & From Gift shop partners and collaborates with many local businesses all year round! We have the best local, handmade crafters of earrings, ornaments, hats, shirts, bookmarks, and more! We are also hosting fun classes and events, starting with our fall themed Charcuterie class on November 25th, with a local Tastefully Simple rep, Roxanne!

What role does your business play in making Kenosha a festive destination?
To & From Gift shop not only participates by lighting up our storefront, but also embraces the holiday spirit by offering the BEST gifts, stocking stuffers, you name it! Come see our Kenosha holiday ornaments!
What do your customers seem to love most about your business during the Holidays?
Since taking over in September, we’ve received nothing but positive feedback from our amazing customers. People have come to see To & From Gift Shop and have been pleased with all of our new offerings. They are eager to come in to buy gifts for their loved ones as the holiday approaches!

How do you thank your customers for their support during the holiday season?
It starts with a simple THANK YOU! Thank you for supporting and being so loyal to our To & From Gift Shop. We will also continue hosting raffles, giveaways, and special deals for our customers!
What do you think surprises out-of-towners most about Kenosha during the holidays? How can the community support Kenosha businesses like yours this holiday season?
Over the past 5-10 years, Kenosha has really turned into something special. The downtown area is filled with the best businesses and the most beautiful lakefront. I think that’s a surprise for many, as it’s really transformed over the years.
The community can support Kenosha businesses like To & From Gift Shop by showing up on our social media posts - sharing, liking, commenting! They can also support by stopping in. If you need a card, skip the big box stores and come grab one from us! Every purchase, recommendation, share, etc. means the world!
Real tree or artificial tree — which do you prefer and why?
I used to prefer a real tree, especially growing up. That’s probably because I didn’t have to clean it up! Now that I have to clean up afterwards, an artificial tree has definitely been easier. Still love a beautiful, real tree, though!
Ugly sweater fan or avoid them at all costs?
Love a good, funny, ugly sweater! Maybe next year we will carry some at To & From Gift Shop.
Eggnog, yes or no and why?
Not a fan!
Naughty or nice?
The Cuss Closet at To & From Gift Shop votes naughty.
