It’s a bird. It’s a plane. No, it’s a disc! That is, it’s called a disc when enjoying a round of Disc Golf. This is a sport that is growing in popularity, and the number of courses available in the Kenosha Area proves it! Fox River Park, Lincoln Park, Silver Lake Park, and the University of Wisconsin–Parkside all offer a variety of courses for all skill levels.

As the name suggests, Disc Golf is a lot like traditional golf but is played with Frisbees or “discs”. Participants fling a disc toward a chain basket on a course in hopes of making a “basket-in-one”, with the player achieving the lowest score claiming victory. Again, like its clubbed cousins, disc golf usually is played on an 18-hole course — each course and specific hole on the course can vary in difficulty based on terrain, length of the hole, weather, and skill level. So which courses are for you?

Fox River Park offers two separate courses and is just a short drive south from Highway 50 in Kenosha County. A perk of multiple courses in one park is that you almost never wait for a group ahead of you to finish a hole. There are 27 playable holes at this park in total — 18 holes on the Gray Fox and 9 holes on the Red Fox. The Red Fox boasts an easier skill level with a par of 33, and is suitable for beginners in the sport or for families with younger children participating. You’ll also find a sledding hill, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing trails, and access to the Fox River Water Trail for non-motorized watercrafts.

Lincoln Park is the newest disc golf course in the Kenosha Area. Situated in an urban park amongst residential neighborhoods, this is an 18-hole course. The biggest challenge here are the holes that are situated along the Lincoln Park Lagoon, especially Hole 12 — don’t lose your disc! Other amenities at this park include popular flower gardens, picnic areas, baseball diamonds, basketball courts, and tennis courts.

Silver Lake Park offers long, challenging fairways (98-522 yards depending on the hole) through a forest setting. This is an 18-hole, champion style course with a par of 56. This is a destination for serious players! Other amenities include fat tire bike trails, kayak and paddleboard rentals, a swimming beach, and walking/hiking trails.

The disc golf course on the University of Wisconsin–Parkside campus is professionally designed and offers both professional and amateur tees. There is an on-site Disc Golf Pro-Shop at the campus bookstore, so you can grab a starter kit or a replacement disc during regular business hours. This course has even hosted disc golf tournaments over the years!

Equipment is inexpensive, skill level is not required to enjoy the game, and all the parks that offer courses are free to visit. You can play any time of year — even in the snow. There is no age limit or time limit. It is the ultimate sport for everyone. Whether playing solo or with a group, you’re sure to enjoy the great outdoors here.
