“I am doing this for my family. I love our beautiful city and the people here. I love everything local. I want to be a part of the community and have a unique small business,” John Ziemba stated before his business Johnny’Z Pour House opened in May 2017. “I am excited to create a place that draws people to our community. I hope this is the first of the establishments that I own in the area.”

Johnny’Z Pour House is located at 10936 Sheridan Road in Pleasant Prairie. With a neighborhood sports bar atmosphere, the business focuses on craft beer and beer cocktails, and serves high quality “pub fare” from a new full service kitchen. John and his business partner Mike Neumann purchased the business and property from the Mike’s Restaurant Group in February 2017.

“I’ve wanted to own my own bar since I was younger. I like meeting new people and getting to hear their life stories. Actually, my sister bartended in this building when it was Tobin Creek - so I feel like I’m coming full circle,” states Ziemba. “I want this to be a place people feel comfortable – a place they come for a great time, great food, and even better people.”

According to John, the building was built in 1950, the year his mom was born. In 2000, he would first visit the building when his sister worked there. When he first started working for Mike’s Restaurant Group in 2008, it was at that building – then known as Mikey’s – that he was trained.

He describes the many building renovations that he made: “All brand new kitchen and equipment, new windows in the front to open it up, faux brick on the north wall, new reclaimed barn wood used for our tables, remodeled both bathrooms to make them more unique and fit the vibe.” He says he went for the “industrial, old saloon feel” when it comes to the ambiance of Johnny’Z Pour House.

The pub features more than a dozen televisions, trivia nights, a pool table, and bags/horseshoes along with outdoor bowling in the summer in the backyard. The menu includes appetizers, burgers, soup, and sandwiches such as Simba’s Hot Beef (named after John’s dog) and Reuben Hood. The most popular item on the menu – that they have quickly become known for – is the “Dynamite Shrimp’n”. It’s described on the menu as “our white shrimp breaded, fried & tossed in JZ’s signature dynamite sauce! Dressed with scallion & sweety drops!”

Lunch, dinner, and drinks are served seven days a week. Breakfast is served on Saturday and Sunday mornings. Daily food specials are offered, including Taco Tuesday and Friday Fish Fry. There are also drink specials such as Sunday football beer/shot specials. The pub is part of the Official Blackhawks Bar Rewards Program.

How did John come up with the name Johnny’Z Pour House? “Amanda (his fiancé) and I were talking once I knew it was happening and we were tossing around name ideas and I’m not sure if she said it or I said it but once I heard it I knew that was it! It was everything I wanted in a name. It was quirky, fun, clever, and I thought unique until I googled it and saw how many Pour houses there are in the world. So that’s why I wanted to make sure I made the Johnny’Z unique and since I’m known as JZ it worked to capitalize the J and the Z so people could pick that out of the name.” He notes he has plenty of draft beers, can/bottle beers, and a full bar “so it is definitely a Pour house.” He can also make some “cool swag” – with expressions like “follow me to the Pour house” or “take me to the Pour house”.

Next time you’re in the area, follow Sheridan Road to Johnny’Z Pour House. It’s located less than two miles from the Illinois state line.
