Kenosha is filled with special places, but some stand out not just because of what they offer, but because of the heart behind them. To & From Gift Shop is one of those places. It’s more than a shop – it’s a space where thoughtfulness meets creativity, where every item has a story, and where the simple act of giving brings people together.
When Trista Jablonski took over ownership in 2024, she didn’t just inherit a business – she embraced a mission: to help people find the perfect way to say, "I see you, I appreciate you, I care about you." That’s the kind of magic this shop holds, and it’s why it continues to thrive in Downtown Kenosha.
I had the privilege of sitting down with Trista to hear about her journey, her passion for unique gifts, and the joy that comes from making someone’s day just a little brighter.
Getting to Know Trista
Can you tell us a little about yourself and what led you to become the owner of To & From Gift Shop?
Trista Jablonski: I’m a wife and a mother, and for the past six years, I’ve been a stay-at-home mom. Now that both of my kids are in school full-time, I was ready to re-enter the workforce. Taking over To & From Gift Shop was a completely unexpected opportunity, but it felt like the perfect fit at the perfect time.
What were you doing before owning the shop? Did you always have an interest in retail and gift-giving?
Trista Jablonski: Before this, I was focused on raising my kids while also co-owning Reliant Home Services, LLC with my husband. I’ve always loved gift-giving, but I never imagined I’d be running a gift shop of my own!
When did you first know you wanted to be a business owner? Was there a defining moment?
Trista Jablonski: My husband and I have always dreamed of owning our own businesses. When we lived in Kentucky, he was stuck in a toxic work environment, and after dealing with the same frustrations repeatedly, we finally said, “Let’s just do it!” That’s how Reliant Home Services was born, and we’ve never looked back.
What was the transition like taking over the shop from the previous owner? Any unexpected challenges?
Trista Jablonski: I was so lucky to have Samantha Unrath (the shop’s original owner) by my side throughout the transition. She was incredibly helpful, and we’ve since become great friends. The biggest challenge was realizing how low inventory was when we took over. Restocking was a bigger investment than expected, but it was also exciting to introduce new products, bring back customer favorites, and put our own spin on things.
Who or what inspires you the most when it comes to creativity and business?
Trista Jablonski: Definitely Samantha Unrath! Seeing what she built and how much people love this shop pushes me to keep it thriving.
What have you learned about yourself since becoming an entrepreneur?
Trista Jablonski: I’ve always been a people person, but this experience has reinforced that I love connecting with others. Whether it’s helping someone find the perfect gift or just sharing a conversation, I thrive in a space where I can brighten someone’s day.
Inside To & From Gift Shop
What’s the story behind the name “To & From Gift Shop”?
Trista Jablonski: Samantha came up with the name because it represents what you write on a gift tag – “To & From.” It was simple, meaningful, and just made sense for a gift shop!
How would you describe the shop’s style and personality?
Trista Jablonski: We have a cozy, antique vibe with a hand-curated selection of eclectic, one-of-a-kind gifts.
How do you select the products for your shop? What makes something “To & From” worthy?
Trista Jablonski: My husband and I love exploring gift shops when we travel. If I see something and immediately think, “Oh! So-and-so would love this!” – then I know it’s a perfect fit for the shop.
Do you focus on carrying locally made or artisan products?
Trista Jablonski: While that’s not our sole focus, we’re making a conscious effort to bring in more locally made goods, and we have exciting plans to expand this area.
What are some of the most unique or unexpected products in your shop?
Trista Jablonski: Our Kenosha Maps shirts and screen prints by Jula Osten – they’re exclusive to To & From!
Do you have a personal favorite item or collection?
Trista Jablonski: I love our Modern Makers collection – candles, room sprays, and more. The owner (of the product line), Larry, is a Kenosha native, and we even have an exclusive scent you can only find at To & From.
Tell us about the “Cuss Closet.” How did that idea come about?
Trista Jablonski: We wanted to carry sassy, slightly inappropriate gifts, but we knew that kind of humor isn’t for everyone. So, we created the Cuss Closet – a separate space you have to step into to experience. It started as the Cuss Cabinet, but it was such a hit that we expanded it into an entire room!
What do you hope customers feel when they walk into To & From?
Trista Jablonski: Welcomed. Excited. And hopefully, inspired to come back – maybe even finding a gift they didn’t realize they needed!
What are some of your best-selling items?
Trista Jablonski: Our sweary socks – people go straight to the Cuss Closet for them!
Challenges & Successes
What was the biggest challenge in taking over the business?
Trista Jablonski: Learning the ins and outs of retail – inventory management, running the register, and daily operations. Thankfully, with Sam’s help, I picked it up quickly.
What has been the most rewarding moment so far?
Trista Jablonski: Hearing customers say, “We love what you’ve done with the store!” It reassures me that we’re keeping the original charm while adding fresh new touches.
How do you handle the ups and downs of being a small business owner?
Trista Jablonski: By embracing the ebbs and flows – no two weeks are the same! We focus on staying positive and knowing we have something special that Kenosha loves.
How has the Kenosha community supported your business?
Trista Jablonski: Other small businesses refer customers to us and Visit Kenosha has been fantastic about promoting us through social media and events. The local support means everything!
Future Goals & Expansion
What are your short-term and long-term goals?
Trista Jablonski: Short-term: Successfully complete our first year, fine-tune inventory, and plan for future events. Long-term: Expand our locally crafted selections and support small businesses by featuring their products.
Any exciting new product lines or collaborations coming up?
Trista Jablonski: Yes! We recently became a 262 Moms Resources sponsor, a nonprofit that connects and uplifts local moms through events and support.
Have you thought about expanding, like opening an online shop?
Trista Jablonski: Potentially! We already ship items – just message us on social media if you see something you love!
Where do you see To & From in five years?
Trista Jablonski: With online shopping becoming more dominant, I just hope we’re still here, providing a space for unique, in-person gift shopping.
What legacy do you hope to leave with the shop?
Trista Jablonski: I want to continue Samantha’s legacy – a shop that people love, with a welcoming and fun atmosphere.
Anything else you’d like people to know?
Trista Jablonski: We’re always bringing in new and exciting gifts, so stop by often! We also love hearing from our customers – if there’s something you’d love to see in the shop, let us know!
At To & From Gift Shop, it’s not just about what you buy – it’s about how you make someone feel. Whether it’s a heartfelt present, a quirky surprise from the Cuss Closet, or a simple reminder that someone is thinking of you, this little shop is built on kindness, connection, and creativity.
If you haven’t been yet, I encourage you to stop by, take a look around, and experience the warmth of To & From for yourself. Because at the end of the day, the best gifts aren’t just about what’s inside the box – they’re about the love, thought, and care that come with them.
Support local. Give with heart. And remember – it’s the thought that truly counts.
