Ice Ice Baby - 2017 Edition

1/31/2017 - Deanna Goodwin

Call me crazy, but with the mild winter we’ve been experiencing lately, I’m just a little excited to hear that colder temperatures and maybe even some snow is on the way for the Kenosha Area. That’s because one of my favorite events is just around the corner, and COLD is an absolute must for it to happen. I’m talking about Snow Daze. If you haven’t been lucky enough to experience Snow Daze before (this year is the fourth annual event), the name may be a bit deceiving. Snow Daze isn’t all about snow necessarily; its main attraction is actually ICE. It’s a really cool event (pun intended), and that’s why I’m praying for COLD in Kenosha!

Snow Daze is on Saturday, February 18 from 12 to 3 p.m. at Library Park in Downtown Kenosha. There will be more than a dozen amazing ice sculptures on display, which are created by professional sculptors from Art Below Zero. The theme of this year’s event is “The Chronicles of Narnia”, and ice sculptures depicting heroes and villains from the children’s series will be featured. The theme will also come alive as actors portraying favorite Narnia characters will mingle with guests throughout the park. Other activities will include ice sculpting demonstrations, children’s crafts inside Simmons Library, and a visit from several community mascots. Visitors can also get in on the ice carving action by helping decorate a special “Chronicles of Kenosha” ice display.

But the icy fun doesn’t stop there. Take a stroll beyond Library Park and enjoy the “Downtown Ice Tour”. More than three dozen businesses will have ice sculptures displayed outside their storefronts throughout the Downtown business district.  Some of the sculptures you’ll see this year include the Statue of Liberty, a Chicago Cubs player, Hello Kitty, Kenosha classics like a lighthouse and streetcar, and many more fun themes.  These sculptures will debut during Snow Daze, and then remain on display as long the weather permits.  I love public art projects like this… especially when it gives me the opportunity to visit some great local businesses while I’m enjoying these masterpieces in ice!

So bundle up and come chill in Downtown Kenosha!  When you’ve had your fill of frosty fun outside, do a little shopping or get a bite to eat at any number of Downtown’s great shops and restaurants. And there are wonderful attractions and entertainment Downtown including several museums, Kenosha Winter HarborMarket and Kenosha’s Electric Streetcar too!
