Family Dinner Date - To Go

Family Food Night in February at Kaiser's

Everyone has to eat, right? Well, then it is best to eat great tasting food. My take on good Kenosha Eats right now are Kaiser’s Pizza & Pub and Robin’s Nest Cakery – both located in Downtown Kenosha.

Pizza from Kaiser's was first on the yum-yum list on a recent family night. We ordered takeout at the restaurant to get a feel and ambiance of the place. Kaiser's Pizza & Pub had been voted Kenosha's Best Pizza and Kenosha's Best Family Restaurant by Kenosha News readers, so we definitely had to check out what they had to offer. Phone-in orders for carryout are accepted – but we walked in and placed our order so we could scope out the restaurant. Having worked in a restaurant when I was younger, I was impressed how clean and orderly the restaurant was. Some of the staff, Brooke and Bailie, greeted us with big smiles, were very friendly, and took our order. Kaiser’s is known for their pizza, and they have build-your-own options, as well as some house specialty pizzas. We got an assortment of pizzas and Kaiser's famous Sidewalk Fries – all of which were ready pretty quickly and we were soon out the door and on the way home while salivating from the aroma of deliciousness emanating from the cardboard boxes.

The first pizza was the staple half cheese pizza, but the other half was pepperoni and pineapple?!?!? A friend at the Visitors Bureau had recommended the pepperoni and pineapple combination but I wasn't so sure of how the kids were going to react... they INHALED IT! Winner! The second pizza was entirely for my girlfriend - she loves tomato and onion - definitely no complaints there with the thin, crispy crust and fresh, tasty toppings. The third pizza was the Kaiser's Special, otherwise known as the SMOG (Sausage, Mushroom, Onion, Green Pepper). It was fantastic, as well, with a good amount of each ingredient! The Sidewalk Fries were cubed potatoes, fried with their skins. Seasoning and Romano cheese topped the potatoes and a side of Kaiser's homemade Ranch dressing accompanied the appetizer. Very, very delicious as the potatoes were tender and seasoned just right! Kaiser's uses fresh ingredients and it is evident in the taste and how fast 7 kids and two adults devoured Friday night's dinner.

FamilyFoodFebruary_ValdezRobin.jpgTo satisfy a sweet tooth, or nine, we had also stopped at Robin's Nest Cakery to pick up some cupcakes to bring home for dessert. Robin Shiels, the owner and lead baker/designer, runs this wonderful Kenosha institution with a smile, lots of hard work, and a passion for what she and her team create. Robin started the business seven years ago. Robin insists on everything being baked fresh, nothing frozen, frosting is handmade, and that nothing comes out of a bucket. Her love for custom cake making is evident in the final product – her cakes are often the centerpieces for weddings, celebrations, and special events. Not only does she do impeccable work that you can see, but the love comes through in the taste of her cakes, too! 8-10 flavors of cupcakes and at least one flavored cookie fill her display case for anyone to stop by, purchase, and for a small charge, add toppings in her exclusive Cupcake Bar any given day. She’s got a lengthy list of flavors that are available for custom orders, too. I highly suggest trying one, or all, of Robin's delectable cupcakes. And if you’ve got kids in tow, the cupcake bar is a huge hit for a little fun. My son Ian and daughter Kaity had a run at Robin's cupcake bar to add toppings to their already delicious cupcakes. An assortment of drizzles and toppings could be added, along with a variety of candy toppings. Ian and Kaity were ecstatic to customize their treats and Robin was so helpful - being allergic to certain nuts herself, Robin helped my daughter who is allergic to nuts navigate the toppings bar.

Robin has just expanded her business to include a cafe and enhanced storefront along 56th Street. Her bakery will remain in her existing storefront, but the new space is connected to a new video gaming center. In the new space, Robin will have expanded hours and an expanded menu. New offerings include breakfast foods and pastries, homemade hot pretzels (with cheese or mustard, of course), more baked goods, and more to be announced soon. With one visit, you’ll be hooked like my family and I are.

We brought home one of every flavor of cupcake in her display.  We did a family taste test to decide which flavor was the best. Being a business analyst by trade, I documented the results from each cupcake taste test from each taster. The cupcakes were cut up into 8 pieces and each of us had a piece of each cupcake then we would go to the next flavor, and so on. The scores were tallied and averaged. The winner of the Robin's Nest Cakery Cupcake Flavor Test was...Double Chocolate! Chocolate seems to always win but to be honest, I enjoyed every flavor! The cakes were velvety and the flavored icings were smooth and the perfect balance to the cake.

So, whether you are a visitor or a local resident, these are two places that you definitely don’t want to miss! Pro-Tip: Kaiser’s also carries a featured variety of Robin’s cupcakes at their restaurant as their dessert offering, so there is no excuse for you not to enjoy both!
