Thank you so much for your order. As a small business we are relying on customers like you! Rest assured, all orders are being prepared with the greatest attention to cleanliness and sanitation. Wishing you and your family health and safety during this difficult time.” Signed with a heart, this is the postcard message that came with my recent online order from a local Kenosha shop - Jack Andrea. This is the love you get when you shop local!

Yes, you can both shop local and shop online at the same time! Online shopping comes in handy when words such as pandemic, social distancing, safer at home, and quarantine have become part of everyday vocabulary. Here in Kenosha, we are fortunate to have patient and resilient entrepreneurs who have been creatively adapting to the circumstances. Many local shops and restaurants already had online stores – or have been quickly creating or expanding them.

I recently had a goal to shop online at five local Kenosha businesses. I specifically was looking for merchandise or gift cards. At this link, you can view a running list of how numerous restaurants, shops, and other attractions in the Kenosha Area are adjusting operations as a result of the current health crisis. Listed below is merely a few options that I personally chose:

-I purchased Easter treats, lotion, and a gift from Jack Andrea.

-It wasn’t possible to dine out for corned beef & cabbage this year (though I did make my own at home), so I bought a gift card from Ashling on the Lough, Kenosha’s year-round Irish pub and restaurant. Once we can dine in restaurants again, I will re-create St. Paddy's Day!

-I purchased a gift card from Roots Hospitality Group, which is valid at Waterfront Warehouse and La Fogata Mexican Grill in Kenosha. You do not know how much I am craving the unlimited soup, salad, and bread lunch special at Waterfront Warehouse right now! As soon as they re-open, I'll be there!

-I bought gift cards from Sandy’s Popper. They will deliver popcorn and ice cream right to your door during this crisis, but I only ordered gift cards. Once my family can gather again for celebrations, they can expect a lot of popcorn!!!

-I also made a purchase from Franks Diner. I can’t tell you what because it’s a gift! But I can tell you that they offer gift certificates, shirts, mugs, and more in their eStore.

I must confess. I had an alternative motive. Not only did I want to support local businesses, but I also earned a free Kenosha Support Squad t-shirt from The Lettering Machine. You can too! Details are on the shop’s Facebook page.

Locally owned, small businesses are what helps set one community apart from another. Wherever you are during this health crisis, I encourage you to support your local businesses. Maybe you’ll receive a heart-signed thank you note as well!
