Fresh air is good for the mind, body, and soul. It's also an easy way to practice physical distancing during the COVID-19 health crisis, so we’ve got some great ideas for you! It is suggested that 10,000 steps is a good target number of steps to reach daily for the average person. This loosely translates to about five miles. Your goal will be easy to reach while you explore these venues that offer plenty of space to keep a safe distance from others. Grab your digital pedometer or mobile device to count your steps while you enjoy these routes to hit your walking target.


If a scenic route is what you seek, look no further than Petrifying Springs Park. Affectionately known as “Pets” by local residents, this is the oldest park in Kenosha County. With 350 acres to explore, amenities like hiking trails, and a dog park are all great for keeping you and your crew active. The main multiuse trail that circles around the park offers a paved course making it perfect for running, walking, biking, or even toddling with your little ones. You’ll find shaded areas with trees lining the trail and quaint areas to pause where the Pike River runs through the park.

Located just west of I-94, Richard Bong State Recreation Area was a planned Air Force base in the 1950s and was converted to a nature area by the early 1980s. This unique park boasts more than 4,500 acres of nature areas, campsites, trails, and more. “Bong”, for short, is a great place for snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and hiking, too — so options for logging miles are endless. This state recreation area offers nine mapped trails for different uses. The Yellow Trail is a generally level route with a nice mixture of grassland, woodland, and wetland. It is also a great trail for bird watching!

Complete your steps: Add on a quick cool-down lap around the Gray Trail, which is relatively flat with no steep grading, to hit your daily target.

Alternate Route: The Red Trail is the longest trail in the park and offers an overview of what the landscape looked like before being altered for the planned Air Force base.


If a more urban route is what you seek, the Pike Bike Trail is a great option. With miles of Lake Michigan views, this is a great trail for walking and running — not just biking. This section of the 10+ mile trail starts at HarborPark, where sculptures line the Kenosha Harbor. After passing through Wolfenbüttel Park and Eichelman Park, walkers will enter the Third Avenue Historic District where historic homes adorn the path before reaching Southport Park as a turn-around point. This route is completely paved and flat.

Complete your steps: Continue south past Kemper Center to Southport Park and even further to the Sand Dunes for great hiking along the lake if you want to extend the excursion.

Alternate Route: Start at HarborPark, but work your way north to Simmons Island then to Carthage College where you can walk through campus. Carthage is home to the Mary Alice Moody Arboretum.
