Ahoy matey! Climb aboard for fun on the Tall Ship Red Witch. Last year was our family’s first time on the Red Witch! I have a toddler, so I am always looking for things to do that he and I will both be able to enjoy. My son is a classic gearhead; if it moves he’s interested, so I thought the Red Witch would make for a pretty solid, whole-family adventure.

In preparation for our voyage, I bought our tickets online (there’s usually a Groupon available, so keep your eyes peeled) and checked the website for rules. I also packed up my son’s life vest; there are adult sized life vests aboard the ship for passenger use but they are one-size. Kenosha has a pretty strong current near the harbor so as a parent I feel it’s important to be prepared.  Boarding is easy, but precarious if you have mobility issues. The staff is ready and willing to assist passengers aboard.

So, what happens when you are on the boat? The ship has low sides, which provides great opportunities to view Lake Michigan and the views of Downtown Kenosha from the water - unobstructed. The sunset cruise is undoubtedly offers the best views of the day, so buy your tickets well in advance as these times sell out quickly. You can buy drinks on the ship and yes, there is a restroom.

I really enjoyed our lake tour. It was a perfect length for our family. Seeing Kenosha from the lake was interesting; the downtown skyline looks very different from that direction. Lake Michigan is such a phenomenal feature of the area and the Red Witch is a great way to enjoy our beautiful lakefront! The tour includes a history of the ship, conversation with the captain and crew, and a little information about the Kenosha area. You can talk with your friends and family, meet new people, or just enjoy the ride and views. There is not space to get up and walk around though, so be prepared to sit for the duration.

The Red Witch will be sailing all summer long, and will also participate in the Kenosha Tall Ships Festival the first weekend of August! There will be plenty of opportunities for all things Nautical this summer. Be sure to add the Red Witch to your itinerary when visiting our Harbor Town.
