Celebrate Tourism & Small Business in Kenosha

Small Business Week and Tourism Week in Kenosha WI

Dear Neighbor: A Tourism Week Message

It’s the first week of May and I’m probably not alone in putting all those April showers and grey skies behind us and looking forward to some sunshine and warmer temperatures. As the saying goes, “April showers bring May flowers”… so it’s a perfect time to appreciate nature’s growth all around us. It’s also a time that we in the tourism industry celebrate another kind of growth – the growth of tourism in our communities.

May 5 - 11 is National Travel & Tourism Week, a celebration of the contributions and accomplishments of the U.S. travel industry. While every week is “tourism week” here the Kenosha Area CVB, it’s an opportunity for us to share with you how tourism enriches and strengthens our community. According to the Economic Impact of Tourism in Wisconsinreport recently released, visitors spent $227.8 MILLION in Kenosha County last year (up nearly 7%) and raised $24.6 million in state and local tax revenues. Since 2011, tourism spending has grown a whopping 46%. That’s a good indication that more and more visitors are discovering that Kenosha County is a pretty special place.

Tourism Week is also a good time for us locals to be “Tourists in Our Own Town” – to explore the many great things to see and do in our own back yard. Those places that tourists enjoy and appreciate when they visit? They’re the same places that make the Kenosha Area such a great place for us to live. Kenosha’s amazing lakefront. Five unique museums. One-of-a-kind shops, boutiques and galleries. An amazing arts scene. Distinctive restaurants and night spots. And outdoor adventure galore. If you can’t find something fun to do here, you’re just not trying! Our website, annual Visitors Guide and seasonal FUN 101 list are all great tools to keep handy when you’re feeling a little touristy or looking for something new to do in town. As an added treat during Tourism Week, you can enjoy free admission and other freebies at popular local attractions as part of our Free Days promotion – check it out HERE!

May 5 - 11 also happens to be National Small Business Week, which is actually quite fitting. Small businesses are the backbone of our nation’s economy and the cornerstone of tourism across America. This is especially true here in Kenosha County. More than half of the businesses we partner with to produce the Kenosha Area Visitors Guide are small businesses whose owners are local – those we call our neighbors and friends. These people – along with their businesses – are what make the Kenosha Area such a unique destination. I love that we have so many “only-in-Kenosha” experiences to offer visitors, and to enjoy myself! Here’s a short list of some of my favorite local stops (click on the categories to discover your own!):

Against the Grain
Jack Andrea

The Red Oak Restaurant
Tuscany Bistro Bar & Grill
Waterfront Warehouse

Kenosha Creative Space
Lemon Street Gallery

I hope you’ll join me in taking time this week – and all year-round – to be a Tourist in Your Own Town!
