Summer is winding down, and for my family that means getting outside to enjoy the warm weather as much as possible. I start cramming as many events and activities as possible into the few days and weeks when I start to realize that summer is almost over. I fill our weekend schedules until my wonderful husband simply can’t deal with another trip to the splash pad (or the beach, because I have my fingers crossed for a warm late August and early September). And while I love pumpkin spice and corn mazes, I’m just not ready for summer to be over yet. If you’re feeling the same way don’t worry, there’s still more fun to have before the crisp fall air sets in!

As I said, we will be outside a lot in the coming weeks – and you should be, too. For my husband that means a lot of bike riding and disc golf. There are more than 130 miles of bike trails to explore around the Kenosha Area, including the Kenosha County Bike Trail and Pike Bike Trail. Long bike rides are one of our favorite ways to exercise as a family! Another fun outdoor activity we enjoy together is disc golfing – played with a Frisbee instead of clubs. My husband is an avid disc golfer and enjoys visiting all four locations in Kenosha County: Fox River Park, Lincoln Park, Silver Lake Park, and the campus of UW-Parkside. It’s nice to have so many nearby options—even if my disc golfing skills are still a work in progress…

One of my favorite things about Kenosha summers are the many free concert series around the downtown. I especially love stopping by evening concerts, as we’re often walking nearby. Peanut Butter & Jam runs every Thursday (11:30 a.m. and 6 p.m.) through August 30, which means only two concerts remain (August 23 and 30) before they’re done for the year! A few other free concert series are winding down this month, including Twilight Jazz (with an August 28, 6 p.m. performance remaining), Lincoln Park Live (final show on August 29, 5:30 p.m.), and Jazz on the Roof (August 30, 7 p.m.). There’s also a performance by the band, Hot Nuts, on the rooftop of Mike’s Sportsbook for patrons every Sunday night while the weather cooperates and live music every Saturday at the Petrifying Springs Biergarten (times vary). The Biergarten is a great option if you take the kids because you can hear the music from the playground!

As for upcoming events, I’m looking forward to Beer and Curd Fest at Simmons Field on August 25. My husband and I both really enjoy craft beer (and cheese curds), so this is right up our ally. The $30 ticket includes unlimited beer samples, a souvenir glass, and one sandwich. There’s also a $20 ticket option for those that don’t want to drink beer. Cheese-a-Palooza is happening again Labor Day Weekend, offering cheese lovers like us a beautiful and delicious day by the lake. Another Labor Day Weekend tradition is the Kenosha Classic Cruise-In Car Show - last year this show featured over 1,700 cars to see!

I’m also interested in taking the Chiwaukee Prairie Walk this year, which offers its last sessions September 15 and 20. Participants are encouraged to take photos during the two-hour hike, which is geared toward adults and older children. If you’re looking for a trip with the little ones, try the Pringle Nature Center’s “Leave No Child Inside: Summer's Last Fling” free event on August 25. Kids can explore the Bristol Woods, sit in a ‘magic spot’ and check out the pond critters. If you're not sure what to explore, Pringle has suggestion cards with tips on how to explore the woods.

Whether you are in search of food or family fun, there is still time to enjoy the summer sun in the Kenosha Area! Soak it all up before the fall fun starts!
