School and the sun are out! That means it is time to soak up as much summer fun as possible! For my family, I try to keep a variety of activities planned so that our free days are full and busy. As the mom of a toddler on the verge of three, that philosophy either brings a day full of adventure or a total meltdown (or both), but in the end it’s always worth the experience!

We like to use the outdoors to learn and play in the summer, and one of our favorite things to do is take nature walks! I recommend Richard Bong State Recreation Area for fun nature inspired activities with the kids. Bong offers several activities throughout the summer, with nature walk events like “Knee-high Naturalist”. Kids ages 3 – 5 can enjoy hands-on programs, like the upcoming July 12 session “Turtle Tales”. Other youth programs include Friday Froggers, Butterflies of the Park, and Flickering Fireflies (which is an evening program great for older kids).

Pringle Nature Center offers “Nature Story Time” for all ages, educational nature hikes, crafting sessions and fun outdoor events like International Mud Day (June 27). Both Bong and Pringle run programs all summer long June – August, and have low or free admission costs. Hawthorn Hollow also offers kid friendly events during the summer, so that’s another nature spot we like to visit with our little one. For park days and a picnic, we like to visit the amazing Dream Playground or one the many play areas at Petrifying Springs Park.

In the summer there are so many reoccurring activities for kids! The Kenosha Public Library offers several story time sessions by age group. You can find a reading event most days of the week if you check their calendar. We also enjoy visiting the Dinosaur Discovery Museum on weekends to dig up fossils at Dino Digs in the Little Clint exhibit! It’s so fun watching the excitement on my son’s face while he uncovers a fossil. I’m also looking forward to all the music this summer. When we have time on Thursdays, we try stop by the free Peanut Butter & Jam concert series downtown. The music makes for a wonderful backdrop as we stroll downtown.

Annual events are also on our list of family fun. Jerry Smith Produce & Pumpkin Farm is hosting their famous Sweet Corn Fest (August 11-12). Enjoy farm-fresh roasted sweet corn, cooking demonstrations, animal encounters, and farm-themed fun for the kids, not to mention the craft and food items available for adults to browse! And of course, we never miss the Kenosha County Fair (August 15-19) in Wilmot.

Whether you are looking for affordable fun for the whole family, just enjoying a day at the park, or checking out a special event that will be the highlight of your summer adventures, you can find plenty of Kenosha Fun to keep you busy on our calendar of events!
