Dear Kenoshans,

Whether you are new to the area or you’ve lived here your entire life, there are many things to discover in Kenosha. No matter what time of year it is, there is always something for you to do. One of the things I have been able to do as a transplant here for a fixed period of time, is fully immerse myself in the community and get to know everything I can about Kenosha.

Many locals might take Lake Michigan for granted, however, it’s not just an enormous body of water – it is also a place where memories can be made. There is nothing like taking your family to the beach and spending the entire day under the warm summer sun. It’s like a vacation, only there’s no need to travel far. Some of my best memories here were spent with my toes in the sand and watching the waves fall onto the shore.

No need for chain standbys here. Locally owned restaurants are plentiful and increasing in number and variety. For those that are local, maybe there is a restaurant you’ve passed on your way to work for many years but never found the time or motivation to check out. Maybe you frequent the same restaurant every week for your “usual” order. Get out and try something new! You never know what you may be missing out on, it may be the best meal you have ever had. For instance, Iguana Wana Mexican Grill & Tequila Bar is fairly new to our area, and has already become quite popular. Big Star Drive-In, in my opinion, has the best cheeseburgers ever! Seriously what is that cheese made of - Gold? The whole experience is one to remember. From the moment you drive up and order your food, to the next when you devour your food, all without stepping a foot outside of your vehicle, so that means it’s perfectly acceptable to wear your pajamas! I’ve learned that if you grew up on Big Star, you may prefer it over The Spot Drive-In. Go outside your comfort zone and have a Spot Double Cheeseburger instead – they are fabulous, too! Have you even ever been to a Supper Club? It’s what Wisconsin is known for – go check out HobNob!

Maybe you are guilty of hitting big box stores or doing all your shopping online. You’re missing out on the treasures at Jack Andrea, Seebecks, and Peacetree Originals. Shopping local isn’t an inconvenience, it is a way to support jobs in your community and discover amazing new products. Mars Cheese Castle isn’t just for “tourists” you know – they legit have a huge variety of cheeses from all over the world that you won’t find at the grocery store. If you’ve never been to Modern Apothecary you are seriously missing the boat. (And speaking of boats – have you ever gone charter boat fishing on Lake Michigan?)

We live in a world where we have access to just about any information you could think of. No longer do we use paper maps to discover new and exciting things around us. Instead, we can look up where to eat, shop, workout, and visit in a matter of seconds. I encourage you all to get out there and explore Kenosha. Bring your family or some friends and go try that new place down the street. Or take your sweetie down to the lake and watch an evening sunset over the beautiful horizon. Take your pup for a doggie fro-yo or a treat at a local shop. Explore a beer garden or brewery. No matter where you go or what you do remember that you don’t always have to travel far for adventures. Sometimes the adventure is waiting right in your own backyard – and Kenosha’s back yard is FULL of FUN! I love your city and I hope you explore more often and remember to show it some love, too.
