Although the calendar says it is still autumn, we all know winter is just around corner! Nothing represents this time of year better than getting outdoors and enjoying a vast array of winter weather activities in Kenosha County.

In my family, we enjoy sledding, snowboarding, and skiing. And we don’t have to look far to find the ideal place to participate in all these activities. Since 1938, Wilmot Mountain has been making winter more fun and affordable for families and it is one of the Midwest’s best destinations for all of your snow sport needs. Plus, it is conveniently located between Milwaukee and Chicago, making it an ideal destination.

Now, it is no secret that to enjoy things like skiing and snowboarding… you need snow. Mother Nature doesn’t always cooperate, though. Lucky for us - Wilmot Mountain has expanded their snowmaking process to a state of the art system that allows for more snow to be made and to allow terrain to be opened earlier in the season.

Once there is a solid foundation, let’s get to the fun activities. Wilmot Mountain has everything a skier and snowboarder are looking for. Whether you are a beginner or a seasoned pro, their nearly 120 skiable acres, 23 trails, 7 lifts, 2 conveyor lifts and progression terrain parks with a double high speed rope tow are sure to impress! All skill levels are welcomed - whether you want to master the Black Diamonds or cruise the greens. There are areas for snowboarders to turn tricks, and skiers to test their speed and skill. Truly, there is something for everyone at Wilmot.

Perhaps something a little less intimidating is where you want to start? Snow tubing is great for the whole family! Bonus: There is no need for lessons or equipment. All you need is a sense of adventure to enjoy this activity, as Wilmot Mountain provides the tube for you. Their tubing area is over 1000-feet long and has 22 lanes. Two conveyor belts make getting back up the tubing hills easy, too, so you can save all your energy for the ride down!

If you’re new to winter sports, don’t fear. Wilmot Mountain offers lessons! There are group lessons for both children and adults, as well as private lessons. You can sign up for half day or full day instruction, or even multi-week courses to perfect your skills in skiing or snowboarding. Wilmot Mountain even offers rentals for skiing and snowboarding equipment so you can give the sports a try before you buy your own gear. Once you do have your own gear, they also have a repair shop! You’ll be a regular at Wilmot in no time – so be sure to check out their season pass deals.

Of course, all this activity will make you hungry and thirsty. Thankfully, you can satisfy your taste buds by dining at Walt’s Tavern which is named in memory of Wilmot Mountain founder, Walter Stopa. Options include appetizers such as Wisconsin Cheese Curds, Fried Pickles, and Wilmot Nachos featuring house made tortilla chips with creamy guacamole and Hatch Chile sour cream. You can warm up with some of Walt’s French Onion soup or go light with a Kale and Goat Cheese salad. Or dig into one of their specialty sandwiches like the Bavarian Beer Brat featuring stone ground stout mustard or the Braised Pork Belly topped with Asian Slaw and Sesame Ginger dressing. And you can’t forget the sides and desserts, especially their “Iron Kettle” Mac & Cheese topped with hickory smoked bacon and the S’more Lava Cake filled with smoked chocolate ganache! Yum! With great dining options, it’s easy to make a whole day of family fun at Wilmot Mountain.

This isn’t just a place to go with the kiddos, though! Walt’s Tavern can also quench your thirst with their wide selection of adult beverage choices. They offer draft beers, including the popular New Glarus Spotted Cow Cream Ale, bottled & canned beers like Blue Moon and Hacker Pschoor, a variety of red and white wines, and even a selection of Mules and Fireside cocktails. So gather your friends for a day on the slopes, and a night at Walt’s!

If a short lunch break is what you’re looking for, you can check out the family-friendly Ski Hill Grill. Here you can get a quick bite with grab-and-go items like hot dogs, made from scratch pizza, deep fried cheese curds, and their World’s Famous Epic Burger. This is the perfect place to eat if you can’t wait to get back out on the slopes.

Wilmot Mountain also offers a great selection of events throughout the winter season, and year-round. On Friday nights, you can enjoy the Live & Local Music Series from 7:00 to 10:00 pm in the Main Lodge for a fun jam session. You can ring in the New Year with their celebration featuring a photo booth, party favors, fireworks, and a champagne toast at midnight. And during the off season you can rent space for your own special event! There is a fire pit with Adirondack chairs on the grounds, too, so you can make your own “event” by spending time visiting with your friends and family while enjoying the crisp winter air.

So get out your cold weather gear, wax up those skis, and head on out to Wilmot Mountain with the whole family for some awesome winter fun!
