Kenosha Community Sailing Center - Lake Michigan Sailing Lessons

There are endless events happening during the summer months near the lake here in Kenosha. On any given day there are multiple outdoor concerts, people conversing outside popular restaurants, and miles and miles of shoreline to enjoy. Luckily, there is one opportunity that may seem hidden on Simmons Island, but everyone can enjoy.

The Kenosha Yacht Club runs the Kenosha Community Sailing Center, which offers something fun and educational for all ages. Whether you have a child that needs a unique activity to challenge them this summer, you’re interested in sailing away with someone special, or you’re just interested in learning something new this summer, the Kenosha Sailing Center offers an inexpensive experience second-to-none.

As a parent, retired summer camp counselor, and middle school teacher, I have a background in summer activities. I know how challenging it is to find something for children to do during the summer. The teacher in me thinks summer isn’t long enough, but twelve weeks is a lot of time. The Sailing Center offers an affordable and unique summer activity that teaches a skillset that can be used in perpetuity. Camps hosted at the Sailing Center typically run from Monday - Thursday, are open to students ages 8-18, and are staffed by U.S Sailing Certified Instructors. Youth lessons include instruction with six different types of boats based on levels the students achieve. Students as beginners start in the Kenosha Harbor, and more advanced sailors can venture out into Lake Michigan.

If you aren’t responsible for kids this summer, or if your kids being home during the day is cause to get out for a night, the Sailing Center also offers classes for adults, too. Ranging in all levels and abilities, adults can learn skills on various boats while meeting new people. You don’t have to own a boat of your own, the Sailing Center has their own training boats and even a boat that Kenosha Yacht Club members or Social Club Members can “borrow” once they art certified! The Kenosha Yacht Club membership is considerably more affordable than neighboring communities, too, which is a plus.

There are still a few sessions left this summer, but it is never too late to start planning for the 2018 season. Consider lessons to be a part of being a Tourist in Your Own Town, or a getaway week for the whole family! Sign up soon - The schooner the better!
