Recently, my husband and I had the opportunity to sail aboard the Tall Ship Red Witch, experiencing the unforgettable views of Lake Michigan and the Kenosha shoreline from the water.

My husband, who is currently serving in the U.S Navy, shared stories with me and said he even recognized some of the "lingo" the crew was using during our cruise.  It was such a thrill to watch the sails being hoisted into the air and the ship shifting in direction. Troy, one of the crew members, gave us an excellent demonstration on the proper way to lay down the ropes in order prevent them from becoming tangled. Did you know just one of the sails can weigh up to 200 pounds? Talk about an arm workout! Another crew member, Eric, told us how they run drills along with the coast guard - such as "man over board" and "fire drills" to ensure safety aboard the ship. It is definitely a professional operation.

Once we were out past the harbor’s walls, I saw Kenosha in an entirely different way. I think I fell in love with this amazing place all over again! If you have never seen Kenosha from the water look back at the shore, sailing aboard the Red Witch is an easy and fun way to experience just that. Captain Andrew Sadock, owner and operator of the boat, runs day, evening and sunset excursions. (My favorite option is sunset – since Kenosha is on Lake Michigan’s west side we enjoy sunrise over the water, but sunsets from the water offer gorgeous shadows and silhouette views of the city.) This dog momma also enjoyed the company of the ever-so-sweet “Pete” - the resident Sea Doggie on board. Sailing outings run May through October, as long as the weather permits.

Helpful information about Red Witch services – Staff will help you board the ship, and life jackets are on board. You can enjoy a cold beverage such as beer or wine while on board. The ship is available for private charters, such as corporate outings or special events. If you enjoy Downtown Kenosha, the ship docks conveniently by HarborPark and is close to many restaurants and museums (great for family fun day or a date night stroll). Tickets can be purchased in advance online, too!

If you are still looking for some summer fun, don’t miss your change to sail on the Tall Ship Red Witch.
