What do hand soap, gasoline, batteries, paper, laundry detergent, antibiotics, fireworks, ketchup and toothpaste have in common? They are all made from corn! Did you know that most ears of corn contain about 800 kernels occupying 16 rows? Would you believe that corn is not technically a vegetable? In the botanical world, it’s a grain! Well, shucks! Did you know that each kernel of corn produces one silk strand on an ear? There are thousands of different types of corn, but only a few are commonly circulated today. A-maize-ing! I learned these kernels of wisdom, and more, after visiting Jerry Smith Produce and Pumpkin Farm last weekend. The farm is gearing up for its Annual Sweet Corn Fest in mid-August and I wanted to know more!

An ever-popular event, this summer marks the 8th year that Jerry Smith’s has hosted the summer celebration. Sweet Corn Fest will take place August 12 - 13, rain or shine! The event will be a weekend filled with food, family and fun! Admission to the festival is just  $5.00 per person and parking is free! The 26-acre farm will be filled to the brim with live entertainment, demonstrations, food, activities and friendly faces from Jerry Smiths!

For those not familiar with Jerry Smith Produce and Pumpkin Farm, the farm was founded in 1971 by Jerry and Rosemary Smith. It began as a small produce stand and quickly grew in popularity! The Smiths expanded their business and created a Country Store, as well as expanded the pumpkin farm! Today, Joe and Amy Smith continue the family business as second-generation farmers! I had the opportunity to speak with Amy recently about the history of the farm and she graciously gave me a sneak peak of what’s in store for this year’s Sweet Corn Fest!

Guests can look forward to activities such as unlimited hayrides, camel rides, face painting, a petting zoo and more! The little ones will love expending some energy on the playground and tackling the tractor tire mountain. Young and old alike will enjoy homemade sweet treats like slushies, decadent strawberry shortcake, and Jerry Smith's legendary Pumpkin Farm Cookies (with the signature orange frosting)! Guests can also feast on hot dogs, brats, chips, soda and, of course, homegrown roasted sweet corn! R’Noggin, a local brewery, will be serving their signature beers at the event. While exploring the grounds, you may even spot some movie stars - the kiddos won’t be able contain their excitement when some of the characters from Disney’s Frozen make an appearance, along with some other very special guests! Keep your eyes and ears open for other local vendors and their products, too. There will even be a search-and-rescue K-9 demonstration.

Another highlight of Sweet Corn Fest is the demonstration of food preparation by local area chefs! Chefs from restaurants such as Mangia Wine Bar, Sazzy B, Franks Diner, Twisted Cuisine, Casa Capri, House of Gerhard and more will be cooking dishes made with Jerry Smith’s very own crop boxes and/or sweet corn. These talented chefs create a recipe in the days leading up to the festival and have 40 minutes during their demonstration time to whip up the dish for guests to sample.

Sweet Corn Fest is the perfect place to spend a sunny afternoon with family and friends! Don’t leave without checking out the country store - gifts, local honey and jams, and delicious fresh vegetables are all waiting for you! The grounds and country store are wheelchair accessible, as are the hayrides. This is truly an inclusive event that has something for everyone in the family. See you there!
