If I mentioned summer, Wisconsin, Lake Michigan, and music… you might think of Milwaukee and the “World’s Largest Music Festival”.  But did you know that Kenosha has its’ own concert series happening every Thursday? Peanut Butter & Jam features a wide variety of bands ranging from 80s rock to country acts.  This summer is the 16th season of the concert series and there are two shows to check out each Thursday - a daytime set from 11:30 – 1:00 and an evening performance from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.  The concerts are held at Veterans Memorial Park, which is located near the Kenosha Harbor with plenty of nearby parking lots and street parking – BOTH FREE.  The park is even a stop on the electric streetcar line, so that is a fun option for reaching parking lots or just enjoying another fun thing to do, too!  It’s also well within walking distance to many Downtown Kenosha shops and restaurants, just in case you want to grab a lunch from Trolley Dogs or some ice cream from Sandy’s Popper before you go!  (This mom knows the importance of feeding the troops!)

I checked out both the day and night shows featuring LFC (Libido Funk Circus) recently, which bills itself as “Chicago’s premiere dance party band.”  The day show was a great way to spend a summer afternoon!  This performance featured the band’s guitarist doing an acoustic show, playing covers of several classic songs.  There is a limited amount of seating available in the park, but most of the concert-goers bring their own blankets and lawn chairs.  It was a very child-friendly affair, with lots of room for play, dancing, picnicking and whatever you like.  Of course, you can also bring your own beverages and snacks, which many people (myself included) do.

The night show was a party waiting to happen!  We arrived at the concert just a few minutes before six (Pro Tip: Arrive earlier than that if you want good seats!) and found a park full of elaborate set ups:  groups of chairs gathered around picnic tables, drinks, coolers, balloons -the whole nine yards!  The “regulars” seemed to be competing for who had the best spread - and it all looked delicious!  I also saw quite a few people who had walked down the street to Villa D’Carlo and picked up a pizza to-go for dinner.  There was definitely energy in the crowd before the concert even started, with local mascots dancing through the crowd and posing for pictures.  There were plenty of children at this concert, too, so it is by no means an adults-only affair!

We had a great time listening to the band sing some classic and modern dance songs, and singing along ourselves.  After a while our toddler started to get a little antsy, so we decided to unleash her from the stroller.  Given the park’s proximity to the HarborPark Promenade, it was a given that we took a little walk down by the lake. Even from a ways down the walk, we could still hear the music of the band as they played their sets. It was a perfect summer evening.

So if you’re looking for a great way to soak up some summer, Peanut Butter & Jam is happening every Thursday through August.  The concerts are completely free, and there is a myriad of different food vendors around the area, and some even right in the park.  Check out the schedule for the upcoming acts and get out there and enjoy the music! You can find other outdoor music events on the Visit Kenosha Calendar of Events, too, for more summertime fun.
