There is something about being at the beach that can take anyone away from life’s everyday demands, even if it’s just for a day. The sand between your toes, the smell of sunblock lingering in the air and the sun shining above with no clouds in sight makes for a perfect day down by the lake. "Did you just say sand?" That’s right! I was pleasantly surprised to find sand and some waves when I arrived here in Kenosha in 2015. Growing up 10 minutes from the Atlantic Ocean, I never imagined that Lake Michigan could be so much like the beach I was used to.

BeachView2.jpgMy ideal summer day here is spent with my husband and pup down by the lake at Simmons Island Beach, where there is a beautiful view of the Kenosha Harbor. Whether you enjoy swimming out in the water, sun bathing, tossing the ol’ pig skin, or even scanning the shoreline for unique rocks and sea glass, you will definitely enjoy a day on this beach with friends or family. Do you enjoy surfing? This beach is ideal for picking up some minor waves for local surfers and travelers with a board, alike. “Wait, did she just say surfing in Lake Michigan?" That’s right, again! During the off-season (September through November) the lake tends to be a bit choppier and you catch a few good waves. How’s that for a bucket list item? My husband surfs on lake waves regularly! Other silent sports can be enjoyed on the water as well – para-sailing, paddle boarding, canoeing, and more! Just bring your gear and launch from any of the beach areas.

If surfing isn’t really your thing, or if you have little ones with you, you may choose to pack a picnic, build sandcastles, or enjoy the park equipment near each beach area. Speaking of parks with great amenities, families love Lake Andrea at Prairie Springs Park. There you can enjoy a calmer body of water with lifeguards and a roped off beach. The park also offers canoe, stand-up paddle board, or pedal boat rentals to take out on the water ($10 or less). Note, there is a small fee to access this beach (unlike the city beaches).

You will certainly work up an appetite after spending hours by the water. Captain Mike’s Beer and Burger Bar is a great place to stop after hanging out at one of the downtown beaches. They offer a menu of various burgers that are sure to win you over – and they have a great outdoor seating area. Perhaps you want to kick back and watch the youth sailing lessons at the Kenosha Community Sailing Center – and grab at bite to eat at the Yacht Club’s on-site restaurant. Maybe you’re just looking for a sweet treat to cool you down? Scoops Ice Cream always has the perfect cool down, sugar up options! Or if you opt for a day at Lake Andrea, Culver’s of Pleasant Prairie and Mason’s Eatery & Pub are nearby for family-friendly dining.

BeachView3.jpgPro Tip: If by chance you are an early bird, I HIGHLY recommend laying down a blanket and watching the breath-taking views of the sunrise over Lake Michigan! And while you’re up and at it early, grab some breakfast at Franks Diner - one of Kenosha’s most well-known diners with delicious food and amazingly witty staff.

With so many beaches to choose from, the Kenosha Area offers more than a fun filled day in the sun. They can offer you a day filled with memories that last a lifetime. If the water has been calling your name, plan a day at one of Kenosha’s many beaches, or heck, go to them all! However you choose to escape here in the Kenosha Area, you’ll be swept away for the day – just like the waves on the beach!
