When Angela Preston was 4 years old, her dream was to own a restaurant, while her friend was going to have her own hair salon. The two businesses would be next to each other so the friends would always be together. That dream would quickly fall by the wayside, and except for working at a fast food place for less than two years during high school, Angela would not work in the restaurant industry. That is until she discovered Grab’s Burger Bar in Kenosha. She became a server there in 2014, a month after it opened. She had worked her way up to being the manager when the opportunity presented itself to buy the business. Either Grab’s Burger Bar would close or she could buy it and save the staff’s jobs. She chose to buy it. She became the owner of the burger joint on May 31, 2017.

Grab’s Burger Bar – a popular place for lunch and dinner – is located on the northside of Kenosha at 2324 18th Street, Suite F. Dine-in and carryout are available, with outdoor seating offered in the summer. The menu features American food with some unique twists. Most of the food is made from scratch – including the black bean patties for a vegetarian-friendly burger experience. Angela says they are farm-to-table and organic whenever possible. Gourmet burgers, tots, soup, chili, salads (Angela says they are a huge hit and are ginormous in size), bone-in and boneless wings, and sandwiches can be enjoyed here. There’s also a build-your-own burger option. A menu of craft beer, wine, malts, and shakes are also available to enjoy.

Grab’s Burger Bar serves 100% fresh Angus beef patties. Angela says two of the most popular burgers are the Breakfast in Bed – bacon, sunny side up egg, Wisconsin cheddar, roasted garlic mayo – and The Carthage Crunch – Wisconsin Colby jack, Merkts cheddar, and kettle chips. When it comes to appetizers, Angela says the hand breaded Wisconsin Cheese Curds are a staple, while the Frickles – hand breaded pickle spears – are also popular.

If all of those choices aren’t enough, there are Shake of the Month and Burger of the Week specials, which customers often name. Grab’s is a family-friendly place with a kids’ menu offered for those 12 and under. On Mondays, kids eat free: one free kids meal per adult entrée, dine-in only.

Grab’s Burger Bar is conveniently located near the University of Wisconsin-Parkside and Carthage College. Local high school and college memorabilia adorn the walls – a lot of which was donated. The remaining members of the original UW-Parkside hockey team eat at a table under memorabilia they donated. Menu item names also reference the local schools. Grab’s is the only off-campus facility that Carthage Cash can be used at – this is money that students put on their Carthage ID card to use the card as a reloadable debit card or meal plan.

The eatery is involved in the community and loves giving back. During Monday Night Stock Bike Races at the Washington Park Velodrome in the summer, Grab's Burger Bar is a vendor, offering fun summer treats and various foods. 2018 was the first year the business also hosted adult tricycle races at the velodrome. Grab’s is also a sponsor of the Kenosha Kutters cycling team. In addition, Grab’s participates in fundraisers and foodie events such as Kenosha Restaurant Week and the Kenosha History Center Chili Cook-Off.

Angela bought Grab’s Burger Bar for the staff – she says it wouldn’t exist without them. “Everybody loves the place so much.” So next time you visit Kenosha, grab a bite to eat at Grab’s Burger Bar – and see all there is to love about the place!
