If you’re looking for Irish fare all year long – not just on St. Patrick’s Day – then Ashling on the Lough is the place for you! This pub and restaurant opened on January 18, 2009. Here you’ll find traditional as well as modern Irish dishes and “the perfect Guinness pour”. It’s an authentic Irish place that reminds people of where they’ve been in Ireland – and it brings back nostalgic memories of growing up with warm, homecooked meals, according to Paul Ward, the general manager. Ashling on the Lough (pronounced like “lock”) translates to “beauty on the lake.” The name is fitting, as the restaurant is located steps from Lake Michigan. Its neighbors also include Southport Marina, the Kenosha Public Museum, and Kenosha HarborMarket (mid-May through mid-October). The restaurant’s outdoor patio takes advantage of the views!

Corned Beef & Cabbage is served here all year long. The description reads: “slow roasted corned beef brisket cooked in-house with a side of creamy horseradish sauce. Accompanied with buttered cabbage, bacon braised slaw, and choice of potato.” The most popular menu items include Shepherd’s Pie and The Reuben. Other items on the menu include Irish Stew, Guinness Pot Roast, County Clare Meatloaf, and Shannon River Salmon. A popular starter is the Colcannon Poppers: “Yukon Gold mashed potatoes whipped with Irish cheddar, cabbage and sautéed onions. Rolled in panko and fried. Served with Guinness gravy.”

Irish specialties, starters, soup and salads, sandwiches, and desserts make up the menu. There are also non-Irish entrees, such as grilled chicken and angus burgers, as well as gluten-free, vegetarian, and dairy-free options, and a kids’ menu. Dinner is served seven days a week. A Brunch/Lunch menu is offered starting at 10 a.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. Much of the food is made in-house, from scratch. That includes the gravies, mashed potatoes, batter for fish fry, coleslaw, bbq sauce for pulled pork, tartar sauce, and ranch dressing. The restaurant will be introducing seasonal menus and monthly specials soon.

Every Thursday there is live entertainment, which can include traditional Irish, bluegrass, and Celtic music. Trivia is played on Tuesdays (every week in the summer, otherwise first and third Tuesdays of the month). “Hoppy Hour” is every day from 3 to 6 p.m. with $4 taps and apps, $3 select shots. The drink menu includes a wide variety of Irish and European Import beers; several Wisconsin local craft beers on tap and in cans; an extensive Irish whiskey, Scotch Whisky and American Whiskey collection; Irish coffee; and a specialty Martini menu. The beer selection rotates. Ashling on the Lough even serves an award-winning Bloody Mary – the mix and seasonings are homemade.

A private room is available that can accommodate 30 to 50 guests. There is no rental fee, though a minimum food and beverage purchase is required. The entire restaurant can also be reserved for parties of 130 to 150 guests. There is a suggested party menu that can be customized. The meal can be served buffet or plated style. Unstaffed catering services are available.

St. Patrick’s Day at Ashling on the Lough includes Irish Dancers, music all day, and Guinness the right way! A full Irish Breakfast is offered, followed by a St. Patrick’s Day menu. “We do it real,” Paul says. It’s about a feeling and a state of mind. It’s about conversation and food. It’s about bringing you back in time to homecooked meals your mom made – and transporting you across the Atlantic Ocean to an Irish bar.

Ashling on the Lough is located at 125 56th Street and is owned by Harp & Eagle Limited. The hospitality group is made up of a group of investors; the main owner is Rip O’Dwanny. The group owns five other businesses in Wisconsin – each of those are a combination Irish pub and boutique hotel. Rip also leads several tours to the west coast of Ireland in County Clare.
