The free concert series presents five concerts in the 2019-2020 season.

Bringing a different kind of food to the hungry, First United Methodist Church seeks to offer beauty to the community through music and the fine arts. To that end, Fine Arts at First was founded in 2005 as an outreach ministry of First United Methodist Church to invite Kenosha and surrounding communities to attend quality concerts and recitals in a religious environment filled with history, unique architecture, a magnificent pipe organ, and a world-class Böesendorfer concert grand piano.

Each Sunday afternoon performance within the nave of the acoustic sanctuary concludes with a reception in the beautiful Bauer-King Hall where you may chat with performers and enjoy dessert.

Jessica Deboer is the Director of the series.

The lineup:

  • October 20, 2019 at 3 p.m.: DUO DIORAMA: MINGHUAN XU, VIOLIN & WINSTON CHOI, PIANO. We open our 15th season by welcoming back Duo Diorama for an afternoon of violin and piano music. Xu and Choi are compelling and versatile artists who perform an eclectic mix of musical styles, ranging from the great standard works to the avant-garde. It is a partnership with a startlingly fresh and powerful approach to music for violin and piano. They will be performing works by Beethoven, Ravel, Grieg, and a new work written for them by Chicago-based composer Igor Santos.
  • December 15, 2019 at 6 p.m.: 15TH ANNUAL MESSIAH SING-ALONG. Join your voice with director Gregory Berg, soloists, and the Festival Arts Chamber Orchestra for our 15th Annual Community Messiah Sing-Along. Enjoy the glittering lights, candles, and Handel’s glorious music. Bring your own score, or we’ll provide one. This will be a highlight of your holiday season!
  • February 16, 2020 at 3 p.m.: PHILOMUSICA STRING QUARTET. Returning to Fine Arts at First is the Milwaukee-based Philomusica String Quartet. Praised for their “beautifully nuanced playing” (Milwaukee Journal Sentinel), Philomusica’s members – violinists Jeanyi Kim, and Sascha Mandl, violist Nathan Hackett, and cellist Adrien Zitoun have been delighting audiences in southeastern Wisconsin since their founding in 2008. Their program will include works by J.S. Bach and Robert Schumann.
  • March 29, 2020 at 3 p.m.: BELLE ENSEMBLE: MISERERE. The Belle Ensemble returns to Fine Arts at First with a program perfect for the Lenten season. This Racinebased singers collective turns to the old and to the new, with a rare and exciting performance of Heinrich Schütz’s Johannes-Passion (St. John’s Passion). This central work is complemented by James MacMillan’s setting of Psalm 51, “Miserere,” and other devotional pieces, both ancient and modern.
  • May 3, 2020 at 3 p.m.: FINE ARTS JAZZ ENSEMBLE: THE JAZZ MENAGERIE. Take a trip to the zoo with our very own Fine Arts Jazz Ensemble as they present a program filled with tunes about animals. From Louis Armstrong’s “Muskrat Ramble” to Duke Ellington’s “Cottontail,” Lee Morgan’s “The Sidewinder,” the Disney favorite “Everybody Wants to Be a Cat,” Nancy Wilson’s “A Sleeping Bee,” and Herbie Hancock’s “Chameleon.” Take a walk on the wild side as we celebrate the close of our 15th season!
