You may not know that you can find some of the best sushi in Southeastern Wisconsin right here in Kenosha. Visit the Columbus Park neighborhood and be greeted by Soon and Bob Noel. Soon had her own restaurant in Korea for 17 years and chose to share her great taste with the Kenosha community by establishing Soon’s Sushi Café here with her husband.
My first sushi experience was during a lunch a few years back with friends from the Danskin Women’s Triathlon. We were preparing to host over 3,000 women in Pleasant Prairie and I was ready for a nice lunch. The group voted to visit Soon’s, and I went along with the plan. I really had no idea what I was eating at the time but I am always open to trying new things - something I learned from my mom when I was younger. Much younger. Thankfully, I was with some experienced sushi-eaters and they are responsible for turning me into a sushi lover!
Since then, I have tried sushi at a number of places as I have traveled around the states, and am happy to say I now play the role of introducing friends, family and clients to sushi. One of my favorite places is, you guessed it, Soon’s! On-the-go or dining in, you will never be disappointed with anything you order at Soon’s. If you do not believe me, WISN has listed them as the #1 sushi restaurant on their A-List several years in a row.
Some favorites, in order of adventure level, at Soon’s include:
California roll – This is the most basic sushi roll – great for beginners. Cucumber, Avocado and Crab are wrapped in sticky rice. Nothing raw to fear here.
Nude Roll – Again, nothing raw here. Crab and avocado are inside a deep fried crust with eel sauce and crunch on the outside. This roll is served warm and has a nice texture, making it a great transition roll.
Spicy Tuna – Soon’s Spicy Tuna is the best. Tuna rolls are pretty popular and are a good stepping-stone. If you aren’t quite ready to go raw, try the variation that is Deep Fried with Fly Fish Roe.
Dragon Roll – Two Shrimp Tempura inside with lightly Grilled Eel and Avocado outside. The grilled Eel and Avocado are an awesome combination. Avocado makes this a great roll for starting to explore different fish and seafood ingredients.
Rainbow Roll – Easily one of the best looking rolls on the menu because it features raw Tuna, Salmon, Red Snapper, Shrimp, Squid and Avocado on the outside of the roll. The Rainbow is a wonderful way to get to try a variety of fish in one roll.
Kenosha Roll – Best named roll on the menu, obviously. This one is extra spicy with Eel, Crab, Avocado and Cucumber inside, topped with fried Soft Shell Crab, Crunch, spicy sauce, scallions, green onions, hot sauce and Fly Fish Roe mixture. This is a nice mix of raw and fried textures and the taste can’t be beat.
